• Pregnancy

For many women pregnancy is both physically and
emotionally stressful and this can detract from the
pleasure of the experience. Acupuncture is a safe and
effective treatment to have during pregnancy and is
used by many women to support their health. Women
report feeling better in themselves, more energised,
more relaxed and that they sleep better after treatment -
what a great preparation for birth!

We believe in empowering women to know their rights
and to make informed decisions about their care during
pregnancy and plans for labour and delivery. We
provide support and information about maternity choices
and can discuss current research on childbirth and
related issues with you.

If required we can make recommendations for birth
professionals (e.g. breastfeeding experts and
independent midwives), private ultrasound scanning,
information on choice of birthplace and guidance on
optimal foetal positioning.

If you would like to have acupuncture to support your
pregnancy or to help with a specific pregnancy condition
you will need to book a pregnancy consultation.

*Required Information
  • Pregnancy Consultation

In Chinese Medicine we look at all aspects of your
health and lifestyle. A full and detailed diagnosis will
enable us to make an individualised treatment plan.

Your initial consultation will last for 1.5 - 2 hours
(depending on the complexity of your condition) and will
be focused on taking your case history. It may include
acupuncture or you might have your first treatment at
the subsequent appointment, once we have identified
the best approach for you.

Please be prepared to answer questions
on the following:
  • Your current pregnancy
  • Previous pregnancies, terminations
    or miscarriages (if applicable)
  • Previous labour, birth and postnatal
    health (if applicable)
  • Menstrual history
  • Contraception history
  • Health history
  • Family history
  • Appetite, diet and digestion
  • Energy & moods
  • Sleep
  • Medication including pain,
    nutritional or antibiotic medication
  • Exercise

During your consultation we will take a detailed
look at your tongue and you will have your pulse
taken. These are Traditional Chinese Medicine
methods of assessing health. We will also take
your blood pressure. Please bring your NHS
maternity notes with you to your appointment.

Based on the information gathered, an
individualised treatment plan will be made which
will include lifestyle advice to support treatment.

  • Pregnancy Conditions

Commonly, women seek acupuncture treatment for the
following pregnancy complaints:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bleeding
  • Headaches
  • Indigestion
  • Tiredness
  • Anaemia
  • Pain - back pain, pelvic pain, rib pain and
    carpel tunnel syndrome
  • Anxiety
  • Breech position or back-to-back baby
  • Overdue

Many women also have treatment to support
their general wellbeing during pregnancy.

Contact us with as much background as
possible on your condition for advice on your
treatment options. If you would like to have
acupuncture to help with any of the above then
you will need to book a pregnancy consultation.

  • Breech or Back-to-Back Baby

Moxibustion can encourage your baby to move into -
and remain in - the best possible position for birth.
Research has demonstrated that 30% more babies will
turn with this treatment.

During this treatment a Chinese therapeutic herb called
moxa is burnt over an acupuncture point on the little toe.
The course of treatment lasts ten days, so instructions
are given to continue with it at home. Although you are
able to do this yourself it is much easier if someone else
does it for you, therefore you are welcome to bring
someone with you to the appointment.

At the appointment you will also be given guidance on
exercises for optimal foetal positioning and are advised
to practice these after each moxa session.

The earlier you present for treatment the better,
ideally by 34 weeks gestation, before the baby has
grown too large. However, we do see women as
late as 38 or 39 weeks gestation with successful
results. Treatment at this stage is more likely to be
successful in second or subsequent pregnancies.

This treatment is also suitable for women preparing
to undergo an external cephalic version (ECV),
when an obstetrician tries to turn the baby into a
head down (cephalic) position. Midwives have
commented that in their opinion there appears to be
a higher success rate in those women who have
been able to use moxa for at least five days before
the procedure (Betts, 2006).

  • Birth Preparation

A series of acupuncture treatments in the final weeks of
pregnancy can help to prepare a woman for childbirth
and help her to build her energy reserves in preparation
for the post-natal period.

In New Zealand in 2004 a study was done looking
at 169 women who received pre-birth acupuncture
given by midwives. Compared to local population
rates there was an overall:
  • 35% reduction in the number of inductions
  • 31% reduction in the epidural rate
  • Compared with midwifery only care a 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery
  • 9% increase in normal vaginal births

It was also noted by the midwives involved in the
study that they observed a trend in the women who
received pre-birth treatment to respond particularly
well to acupuncture induction, further reducing the
need for medical induction.

Birth preparation acupuncture consists of weekly
treatment from 37 weeks gestation. The treatments
are designed to:

  • Enhance optimal foetal position
  • Prepare the pelvis for labour and help ripen
    the cervix
  • Help build the energy reserves of the mother

Induction acupuncture can start from 41 weeks gestation.
In certain circumstances this can be earlier (e.g.
if a medical induction is booked)

  • Labour Induction

Acupuncture for labour induction is believed to involve
the stimulation of the uterus through hormonal changes
or direct nerve stimulation and research has shown that it
can be successful in bringing about contractions and that
it reduces intervention rates such as the use of
syntocinon, epidurals or caesarean section.

Acupuncture can be administered from 41 weeks
gestation (earlier in certain circumstances, e.g. when a
medical induction or caesarean section is booked) to
encourage the natural onset of labour. Successive
treatments over a period of 3-5 days may be required.

This treatment involves the use of acupuncture
points on the feet, hands, lower back and shoulders.
Needles are left in for 20 minutes during which you
may experience increased foetal movements and
mild twinges or Braxton Hicks contractions. You will
be advised on acupressure points to use at home
following your treatment.

If you have been booked in for a medical induction
make an appointment 2-3 days beforehand and
follow-up with self-administered acupressure at
home (guidance will be given at your appointment).

  • Acupressure for childbirth

Acupressure is the application of firm direct pressure
to acupuncture points on the body. Acupressure is
easy to use, promotes natural labour and encourages
partner involvement. Women who use acupressure
during labour consistently report a reduction in their
pain combined with an overall sense of calmness and
satisfaction with their birth experience.

We offer one-to-one or group sessions for women
who are interested in using acupressure for pain relief
during labour.

During labour the use of acupressure
seems to:
  • Promote the release of endorphins
  • Block pain receptors to the brain
  • Dilate the cervix
  • Increase efficiency of contractions
  • Restorative Postnatal Treatment

We offer a one-off treatment known as "mother warming" around four to five days post-birth. This treatment uses moxa (a Chinese therapeutic herb) to energise and aid recovery. We also offer a complimentary facial at this treatment using Weleda natural, organic skin care products.

Contact us for further information or to book an appointment. Saturdays Only.

  • Postnatal Conditions

Commonly women seek acupuncture treatment
for the following postnatal conditions:

  • Mastitis
  • Breastfeeding problems
    - e.g. insufficient lactation
  • Night sweats
  • Caesarean scar healing
  • Postnatal depression

We also see women for a highly energising
one-off restorative postnatal treatment.

Contact us with as much background as
possible on your condition for advice on your
treatment options or to book an appointment.

  • Caesarean Scar Healing

There is little conversation about scars and their effects, particularly for women after childbirth and people often suffer in silence.

Acupuncture may help to resolve or reduce the effects of scar tissue. Using electro-acupuncture the scar tissue begins to soften which allows a fresh supply of blood to the area. Pain and numbness can start to heal.
